Searching for helpful ways to reduce your electricity bill this winter season? You can lower this winter season’s energy bill and save more energy by taking control of your energy consumption and making some changes to your home.

Tips to reduce your home's energy costs this winter season | Joy Giardina | Real Estate Agent

Here are 5 tips to save on energy costs that you should keep in mind while for this winter

1. Eliminate air leaks

Use a sealant to ensure hot air does not escape through windows. Install weather strips for doors and windows to help seal air leaks. Detect the attic and air ducts for leaks to ensure less energy waste. Close the blinds and curtains at night time to keep the heat inside. Finally, you may also consider requesting a home energy check to identify which areas are less efficient.

2. Heat smarter

Another way to keep energy consumption low is to heat selectively. Adjust your thermostat at home at 68 degrees or lower, when you are at work at 50 degrees. Set the thermostat 58 degrees or lower when you sleep at night. One solution is to install a smart thermostat in your home that you can control through your smartphone. You can use automation or programmable functions to make your home warm up while you are back home from work. This will also give you greater understanding and management of your home’s energy.
Do not heat certain rooms if you do not use them too much. The guest room or basement may be empty during the winter months, why not save energy and turn off those heaters?

3. Maintain the airflow
When you are awake and at home, you must ensure that your heater has the correct airflow. Make sure no vents are blocked by appliances or furniture.

4. Unplug

Although this rule applies throughout the year, disconnect devices that are not used during the winter. Computers or electronic devices that are connected to an outlet use phantom power even when not in use. So unplug your charged phone from the wall outlet, invest in some power strips and save energy! Don’t forget to unplug unused appliances.

5. Have a plan

Being in the right energy plan for your home will give you the peace of mind of knowing that there are no surprises in your monthly rate. Many companies offer a fixed rate for services that will yield consistent prices throughout the season.
If you follow these simple tips to reduce your energy consumption, you can spend energy-efficient and stress-free winter and you won’t have to worry about high electricity bills.
